Harley-Davidson is a manufacturer of motorcycles based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which started with small plans in 1901 by a 21-year-old named William S. Harley. In 1903, Harley enlisted the help of his friend Arthur Davidson and Davidson's brother Walter to build a motorcycle strong enough to climb the hills of Milwaukee without using pedals. On 8 September 1904, a Harley-Davidson made its first public appearance at State Fair Park in Milwaukee, where he was engaged in a test of and driven by Edward Hildebrand.
The largest manufacturing job for Harley-Davidson came during World War I, when the company was still in its infancy. The United States wanted motorcycles involved in the war effort and asked Harley-Davidson to begin mass production of bicycles in the country. The company produced 20,000 motorcycles for the war effort. Before World War I Harley-Davidson manufactured a handful of motorcycles for the military to use in their skirmishes on the border with Pancho Villa, but did not produce as much as they did during the First World War
Harley-Davidson was one of only two motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression in the United States and began supplying the government with motorcycles for use in World War II. For the duration of the war, Harley-Davidson manufactured over 90,000 motorcycles for the Allied forces. Nearly 30,000 of the 90,000 manufactured were sent to the Soviet Union in the framework of the Lend – Lease.
During the history of Harley-Davidson company suffered a bad reputation because of films and links with biker gangs. Harley-Davidson have been used in Hollywood movies is the biker gangs in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Harley-Davidson has also been associated with the gang and the gang Hells Angels biker others because their bikes were the biker gangs of their choice.
The models currently manufactured by Harley-Davidson Sportster Dyna, the Softail, Touring and the Revolution. All have been put into production by Harley-Davidson for decades.
Harley-Davidson Company has four manufacturing plants throughout the country and are located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; York, Pennsylvania, Tomahawk, Wisconsin and Kansas City, Missouri. Harley-Davidson Museum, inaugurated in 2008 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and includes exhibits, archives, a restaurant and cafà © and a museum shop. Tours are offered at all four manufacturing plants Company and Museum in Milwaukee. The museum opened on July 12, 2008 and is located at Sixth and Canal streets downtown Milwaukee. This is a three building, 130,000 square feet operation that includes a variety of motorcycles on display, and other memorabilia. The construction and operation of the museum is costing the company a $ Harley-Davidson estimated 75 million and should attract about 350,000 visitors annually from around the world.
In 1983, Harley-Davidson company formed a fan club for owners his bicycle and wrote the Harley Owners Group. As an acronym appears pigs pig is also a nickname for motorcycles. In 2006 Harley-Davidson has its NYSE symbol changed HDI pork.
