One of the most heard phrases, or comments, the tour going great Harleys or other marks on the whole is that the Sportster (and especially the number 883) are only sound to shorten the spinning center. Although they are small, lightweight and can carry two heavy-weight people comfortably, I must disagree with the claim. My bike is a XL883C, with forward controls and 883 cubic centimeters of displacement.
What I do agree, is that extreme distances with a passenger with long legs eat, or you may feel a bit cumbersome when riding a Sportster. This is because the wheelbase and back seat passenger area are a bit more shorter than in Big Twins. Not because the 883 cc would be underpowered, that is not. And, lets face the suspension of securities sportsters rarely comfortable enough for two to riding.
But, when done alone LDR, things are very different from two-up. The 883 cc is very well capable of going faster and safer the cages, and while its acceleration can not be the eighth wonder of the world that has plenty of low-end torque RPM. Can carry lower and their belongings comfortably low rpm, up to 120-130 mph range. It will go faster, safer, if the driver is capable of supporting increased wind resistance on your body for extended periods.
My most over 24 rides have been around 1500-1600 miles or 900-1000 miles, with seat suspension of shares and securities, and D & D exhaust (not the quietest around.) Now, while I could feel the ride in my back and my ass, there was nothing I really could not be done. I think the attitude has a big role to play in making LDR, if you prefer the comfort you need to buy a very expensive cruise luxury. Take a break every 80-100 miles and youÂ'll be fine with a Sportster.
One thing that could be better than the stock suspension is the standard beam. Even if new models have very bright lights, it is still just a light. Every time when traveling at night and raining, I swear I bought a set of rays auxiliaries. Riding with only standard lights at night can reduce the average speed of the drivers, who can be a problem for Iron Butt rides.
Many people have had to change the venue of values to something else, like the seat, Sundowner etc. Apparently I am lucky because I can sit in the seat of stock throughout the day. I guess I have made the seat of the shares of a class of a compromise, one size fits all, which of course does not.

With these two exceptions, I personally barebones enjoy the raw feeling that sportsters offering – no windshield, no fairing, no nothing. Its more to yourself to compensate for long journeys.
